During the appointment, parents and students are apprised of outstanding requirements (credits, courses, and assessments) which must be fulfilled for on time graduation with the Class 2013. The discussion will also include information on postsecondary planning and provide an opportunity to address questions.

Invitations went home with report cards on Thursday, January 12th. Parents, be sure to ask your student for the invitation. Please do not be concerned if your student does not receive an appointment until the latter part of this time frame – the process takes time and is planned so each student will have an individual meeting.

Prior to each appointment students will need to go to gacollege411.org and complete the required college exploration activity outlined below.

You will need to explore – and save in your online portfolio – at least three colleges of interest to you following the directions below.

• Go to GAcollege411.org and create an account
• Click on the College Planning tab at the top of the page
• Click on Explore Postsecondary Schools
• Using one of the tools, such as School Finder or College Matching Assistant, find at least 3 colleges of interest.
• Once you’ve found a school you’re interested in, click on Save to Your Portfolio
• Once you have saved at least three colleges, you can find them again under Your Portfolio > College Planning > Postsecondary Plans.
• Bring a printout of this page to your appointment to discuss with your counselor

Scholarship Financial Aid Workshop

The Guidance & Counseling Department will host a Scholarship/Financial Aid Night presented by the Georgia Student Finance Commission on December 1^st. Guests are encouraged to arrive at 6:15 to pick up materials. The program starts at 6:30. This year two sessions will be offered. There will be a brief intermission between sessions for those who wish to leave early. We look forward to your attendance!

Session 1: HOPE Program
Target Audience: ALL Grade Levels
As you know, House Bill 326, made significant changes to the HOPE Programs, including the creation of the Zell Miller Scholarship Program. These changes have considerable implications for all students. In addition to the changes currently in effect, new rigor requirements for students entering high school during the 2011-2012 school (current freshmen) and beyond were established. In light of these sweeping changes, we encourage parents/students of all grade levels to attend this session.

Session 2: Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
Target Audience : Seniors (other grade levels are welcome)
This very important session for seniors and their parents will review steps for completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA serves as an application for federal student aid (grants, loans and work-study) and state financial aid programs – including the HOPE scholarship. Some colleges may also use the FAFSA for institutional aid programs. Additional Financial Aid programs available in Georgia will also be covered.

First-year applicants for whom UGA is a top choice have the option of submitting a completed application by October 15 of their senior year and receiving an admission decision by December 15. Primary consideration under the Early Action plan will be focused on demonstrated academic achievement: grades in core academic courses through the junior year, rigor of curriculum and performance on the SAT I or ACT with Writing. Early Action candidates may be offered admission, denied, or deferred to the Regular Decision process for further consideration.

Postmark deadline for Early Action applicants: October 15, 2011

• Complete Part I of the application
• Pay the non-refundable $60.00 processing fee
• Request the Counselor/School Evaluation form with official high school transcript (Students, be sure that you have submitted your application before requesting your transcript from the Guidance Office. Requests should be made by September 30^th - two weeks before the deadline. Your counselor will submit the Counselor Evaluation form and transcript online.)
• Send official SAT I and/or ACT scores with Writing section. UGA will only be able to use SAT/ACT scores for Early Action for tests taken by the October 15 Early Action deadline, and the scores must be submitted to UGA electronically by the testing agency.

 Other Deadlines

• Regular Decision Application Deadline: January15, 2012
• In order for students to be considered for UGA academic scholarships, applications for admission must be submitted by December 15, 2011.
• Foundation Fellowship & Ramsey Honors Scholarship Deadline: November 1, 2011 (note: This is a new deadline that falls 2 weeks earlier than it had in previous years)
• Standardized testing date deadlines – Standardized tests must be completed before an application deadline to be utilized in consideration of a student’s application.
  Example: For Early Action consideration, UGA will accept any SAT or ACT with Writing taken prior to October 15, 2011 provided that the student request those scores to be sent to UGA at the time of test registration. Tests completed after the deadline will not be utilized for consideration in that Decision Plan. For Regular Decision consideration, UGA will accept any SAT or ACT with Writing taken prior to January 15, 2012.

A passing score on the GHSWT is required for students to earn a high school diploma and participate in graduation ceremonies. The content area Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT) in English, math, science, and social studies are administered for the first time in March of the junior.

WHO

Students in grades 9-11 will take the PSAT the morning of Wednesday, October 12th.  There is no fee for the exam and students do not have to register. The PSAT is an opportunity for students to receive a preliminary SAT score to determine areas of strength and weakness before taking the actual SAT. In the junior year, scores from the PSAT are also used to determine eligibility for National Merit Scholarships. The PSAT is administered once per year in October. Study materials were distributed through English classes the week of September 6th. Score reports are returned to students in January. Students who are starting or refining their college search have multiple opportunities to learn about postsecondary opportunities. Please be sure to visit the pages dedicated to these opportunities to learn more.

• College Fairs - College fairs provide an opportunity for students to “shop” for colleges. At college fairs, several colleges have side-by-side tables staffed by admissions representatives to provide information and answer questions.
• College Rep Visits - During the fall of each school year, we experience a whirlwind of college representatives in the Guidance Office. Meeting with representatives of various colleges and universities offers students and parents the opportunity to gain a sense of the special flavor of each school, an important step in getting a “good fit” when selecting a college. Seniors who are undecided about their college choice should check the schedule below and arrange to meet the representative(s) of the school(s) they might be interested in. 
• Regional College Information Sessions - Due to travel limitations, it is not feasible for colleges to visit every high school.Likewise, it is not always possible for students to attend every college fair or college rep visit to Roswell. In addition to college fairs and the college representatives that visit the Roswell campus, some colleges host regional information meetings for prospective students and their parents. These sessions are a good supplement to college fairs, providing an opportunity to learn more about a particular institution’s admission processes, requirements, financial aid/scholarships, and life on campus.
• Campus Visits - Nothing can replace seeing and experiencing a college campus for yourself, and hearing first-hand about the opportunities available. Seniors and juniors are allowed up to six college visitations days for this purpose.
• College Career Center - The Center is open daily during lunch with parent volunteers available to help students and parents navigate the college planning resources available.
